In this volume the presupposition is investigated whether women in a polytheistic society had a better position than women in a monotheistic society. To this end the social and religious position of women in Ugarit according to its literary texts is compared to that of women in Israel according to the Hebrew Bible, while the wider context of the ancient Near East is also taken into consideration. After an overview of feminist biblical exegesis, the book discusses the roles of women in the family and in society. It also provides an analysis of the roles of women as religious specialists and as worshippers. Finally, the data on the position of women in the literary texts is compared to that in non-literary texts.

This book deals with central and universal issues of reward, punishment and forgiveness for the first time in a compact and comprehensive way. Until now these themes have received far too little attention in scholarly research both in their own right and in their interrelationship. The scope of this study is to present them in relation to the foundations of our culture. These and related issues are treated primarily within the Hebrew Bible, using the methods of literary analysis. The centrality of these themes in all religions and all cultures has resulted, however, in a comparative investigation, drawing attention to the problem of terminology, the importance of Greek culture for the European tradition, and the fusion of Greek and Jewish-Christian cultures in our modern philosophical and theological systems. This broad perspective shows that the biblical personalist understanding of divine authority and of human righteousness or guilt provides the personalist key to the search for reconciliation in a divided world.

Interpretation of the psalmist's assertions about their upright behaviour towards God or men in Psalms 7, 17, 18, 26, and 44. After a short introduction, the study presents a detailed analysis of Psalms 7, 17, 18, 26, and 44 (text, philology, exegesis). It evaluates previous views of the intention and setting of the psalmist's claims regarding their upright behaviour, such as Beyerlin's theory that the psalms involved were originally used as prayers in a cultic trial by ordeal. It presents a new hypothesis with respect to the purport of the claims. Its subject matter and method make this study particularly useful for all those studying the Hebrew Psalms. Furthermore, it deals with an important topic of the anthropology and theology of the Old Testament, viz. human righteousness towards God.
